Not the first venture together between the two countries.

Singapore is taking part in a joint venture to create a city in China from scratch.

Knowledge City

This project is called Sino-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City (SSGKC).

The SSGKC, which was launched in 2010, involves a joint venture between Ascendas-Singbridge and Guangzhou Development District.

It entails building a 123km² city (approximately one-fifth the land area of Singapore).

This city is located approximately 35km from Guangzhou's city centre.

Half of the city will be preserved as forest, and the remaining half is expected to be developed in phases over two decades.

According to a CNBC report, the first phase of the Knowledge City has recently been launched for about 80,000 people living and working in the area.

The city is expected to eventually be home to about 500,000 people.

Singapore-style planning elements

Nee Pai Chee, vice president of Singbridge International, told CNBC that Singapore has some experience in managing small cities:

"At a micro-level, Singapore does have its experience of how to manage, maybe, a mid-size or small-size city, so I think we can offer some of our experience to China."

Hence, in the planning of the SSGKC, many Singapore-specific urban planning elements were used.

For instance, features included an efficient rail network, a mass rapid transit, an inter-city high-speed rail as well as a network of expressways.

The urban design plan also included parks, water bodies and landscape elements to enhance the city's visual appeal.

Not the first project with China

The SSGKC is not the first instance of bilateral partnership between Singapore and China.

In 1994 and 2007, both governments collaborated for the Suzhou Industrial Park and Tianjin Eco-City (2007) respectively.

The success of these two projects have resulted in the SSGKC.
