Fancy place with a fancy smell.

Durian cafes are hardly a novelty, but these baked durian dishes by Double Durian might just be.

The cafe serves it three ways: charcoal baked, ying yang baked, and traditionally baked.

All durians used are either Musang King, Black Gold or Kings Durian.

Charcoal baked durians

Their signature is the charcoal baked durian, where a durian is grilled whole over charcoal for an hour.

This results in a lukewarm exterior and a cold, creamy interior for the durian. The charred flesh adds to the overall flavour.

Note that this has to be ordered two hours in advance.

This item is seasonally priced, and baking costs another S$5.

If you want to be extravagant, you can also order a Mao Shan Wang to be grilled whole. Right now, this will cost you S$40 — S$68.

Otherwise, there's also the ying yang baked durian, where durians are first frozen, then baked for 10 to 15 minutes until a warm, caramelised exterior and a chilled interior is achieved.

Going for S$15 for four seeds, this should be good for smaller groups.

Traditionally baked durian

The last method is the traditional baking method, or durian baked without its shell (also seasonally priced).

The cafe recommends having it with chocolate or durian ice cream.

And yes, they also sell fresh durians.

And for those who are averse to the fruit, they also sell standard Western food — although we imagine the premises might possess a certain pungency.
