Three Members of Parliament have come out to strongly condemn the response rap video put out by social media personalities and content creators Preeti Nair, 25, and her brother Subhas Nair, 27.

The responses by the MPs came after a police report was made against the video produced by the Nair siblings that took on the "brownface" issue.

The condemnations also followed the response by Home Affairs and Law Minister K. Shanmugam to both the E-pay ad and the song, at a doorstop interview at The Treasury on July 30, 2019.

The Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) also said -- on the same day all these events unfolded -- it issued a notice to the Nair siblings to take down the videos from the Internet.

Both Nair siblings have complied.

A second minister, Grace Fu, who is minister for culture, community and youth, subsequently also panned both the ad and video in her own statement.

Following these public condemnations, a slew of ethnic minority MPs have also voiced their concerns and objections.

Janil Puthucheary

Janil Puthucheary, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Transport & Ministry of Communications and Information, was the first of the three MPs to issue a statement via Facebook at 7.30pm.

His statement appeared initially on the OnePeople.sg Facebook page.

Janil panned the original ad and suggested having the parties who created it to undergo training to better understand "ethnic considerations, cultural sensitivity and how to apologise sincerely".

He also pointed out that the rap response "is vulgar, aggressive, and does nothing to help either the initial mistake nor the circumstances that allowed it to happen"

Referring to the Nair siblings, Janil wrote: "As the performers suggest, two wrongs don’t make a right. They do not seem to have heeded their own advice."

Zaqy Mohamad

Zaqy Mohamad, Minister of State for the Ministry of National Development & Ministry of Manpower, wrote that the original ad had "offended many due to its insensitivity", but the response video "is totally offensive and uncalled for".

His post appeared about half an hour after Janil's.

Amrin Amin

At about 8.40pm, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Ministry of Home Affairs & Ministry of Health, Amrin Amin, called for "stern action" in his own post, as he said he would not stand idly as another race or religion gets attacked.

He wrote: "I won’t keep quiet if others caricaturise the Prophet in the name of art or free speech, similarly I am not keeping quiet now when rap is used to attach derogatory labels, hurl vulgar words and gestures at Chinese Singaporeans."

Addressing the flippant nature of the rap video, he also wrote: "Just because it rhymes doesn’t mean it’s harmless!"
