A dolphin was caught by an angler on Saturday, April 7, at about 7.40am at Bedok Jetty.

A video was shared to the Nature Society (Singapore) Facebook page by a witness, Daniel Sim.

What happened

According to details reported by Channel News Asia, the dolphin was struggling and the angler had tried to reel it in despite calls from the people watching to cut the line.

Sim then called Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES) to inform them of the dolphin, which appeared to have been injured as blood was seen coming out from its tail.

But before that, the angler had already cut the line and the dolphin swam away.

Sim wrote in his Facebook post:

This is what happened this morning at ECP bedok jetty. An angler caught the Dolphin with his fishing rod and tried to reel it in. Many people told him to cut his line but he didn’t want to. I called ACRES to come help save the dolphin. The guy finally cut his line and the dolphin slowly swam away. It seems that the hook was caught at the tail with some seaweed on it. Hope it will be able to get rid of the debris from it’s tail and rejoin it’s family soon.

An ACRES spokesperson said the dolphin was nowhere to be found at the scene and the public can contact it if it is seen again: "We are monitoring the situation for now and urge members of the public to call our hotline at 97837782 should you spot the dolphin."

Reactions

In response to the video, people were generally mad at the angler for even trying to reel in such a large mammal:
