Viewers who used to follow Channel 8 dramas might know 40-year-old Shaun Chen through popular shows such as Holland Village.

Chen is also known for his marriage with ex-Mediacorp artiste Michelle Chia, although the marriage ended in 2011.

Chen remarried in 2015 to Malaysian beautician Celine Chin.

Used to be a smoker

Chen, now a father of two daughters, recently revealed on Instagram that he was a smoker for six years.

The actor picked up smoking when he around 21 years old.

He only took the occasional puff at first, but it eventually became a habit.

Chen said that he had tried quitting twice, but failed both times.

He really set his mind on it when one of his beloved seniors, Uncle Tong, passed away from lung cancer.

Long-term smoking had led to lung cancer, which took Tong's life.

That made Chen think of his own family, and what would happen to them if he also died from long-term smoking.

Takes determination to quit smoking

Chen also highlighted that quitting the habit is "a battle of perseverance", and that it requires a strong determination.

He also shared tips to curb the urge, such as jogging and taking chewing gum to distract himself from the desire.

It took him two months before he didn't feel like smoking anymore.

Chen feels that he has saved some money and become more alert since then.

At the end of the video, he encourages those who wish to quit to persist and hang in there.
