RGS clarifies staff member didn't use "ordinary Singaporean" in "off-the-record" statement

But the spokesperson agrees with the staff's remarks that the move would allow students to engage more deeply with the local community.

The Raffles Girls' School (RGS) has moved into its new campus at 2 Braddell Rise.

The S$90 million campus includes new facilities such as a performing arts centre and an innovation club.

What drew the most public attention from the move was, however, this statement that reportedly came from one RGS spokesman:

RGS clarifies controversial statement

However, RGS told CNA on Oct. 25 that the comments made were not from the school's spokesperson but a staff member.

The staff member did not use the term "ordinary Singaporean" and it was part of an "informal conversation" between a staff member and the reporter that should be "off-the-record", RGS clarified.

What the staff member hoped to convey is that the move will allow students to engage deeply with the local community in Braddell and Bishan.

With the move, RGS is now situated right across the road from Raffles Institution and that will hopefully create more opportunities for collaboration between students from RGS and RI.

Netizens react

In response to the hullabaloo over the use of "ordinary Singaporeans", online reactions have been pretty mixed.

Some comments feel that RGS's statement shows an entitled mentality and took offence with the term.

However, there are netizens who feel indifferent about it.
