Hong Kong's ethnic minority community of South Asian descent were seen handing out water to protesters and participating in the pro-democracy demonstration at the Chungking Mansions on Sunday, Oct. 20.

Dispel rumours against ethnic minorities

The display of support came after unverified reports that suggested the leader of the Human Civil Rights Front, Jimmy Sham, was attacked by South Asians on Oct. 16.

Sham was attacked by a group of four to five armed men at Mong Kok that evening.

This was the second time that Sham was attacked since the start of the demonstration this year.

These reports had subsequently led to some online attacks targeting the minority community.

The leaders of the Muslim community immediately came forward to condemn the reports as an attempt to divide the society.

However, many shops at Chungking Mansions were closed on Sunday as they feared that they would be attacked after those rumours, according to the South China Morning Post.

"We are all Hong Kong people"

Volunteers of different backgrounds came together to give out bottled water to protesters on the street outside the building.

Some members of the minority community were also spotted shouting "Free Hong Kong!" as they joined the demonstration at Chungking Mansions,

Jeffrey Andrews, 34, a social worker who was born and bred in Hong Kong, also made a speech in both English and Cantonese outside the building.

Jeffrey rallied the crowd by saying: "Regardless of skin colour, race, religion or background, we are all Hong Kong people."
