NUS undergraduate claims alleged harassment by graduate student, more females students relate

She is apparently not the only person who has been on the receiving end of such advances.

On Oct. 1, a person claiming to be a 19-year-old undergraduate from the National University of Singapore (NUS) wrote a post to Facebook page NUSWhispersdetailing her alleged experience of sexual harassment involving a graduate student.

(Side note: NUSwhispers is a page for anonymous and confessional posts, ostensibly from NUS students.)

The alleged victim added that she has since submitted a report in March 2018 along with five other female students, but there has been no update from on the case thus far.

This is the Facebook post in question:

Summary of what happened

As the post is rather lengthy, here's a summary of what allegedly happened:

  • The student and the alleged harasser first met in mid-April 2017, when she was feeding cats at University Town as part of her volunteer duties.
  • During their first meeting:

    • The male student refused to answer her questions on his faculty and year of study directly. Instead, he replied that he will reveal it eventually.
    • She added that "there was something about him that was sending alarm bells off in [her] mind", and that included the way he stared at different parts of her body and his awkward speech patterns.
    • However, she brushed those off as personal quirks.
    • The female student found out that both of them were from the same secondary school and junior college.
    • They swap numbers as she assumed that he was interested in becoming a volunteer with the group.

Allegedly sent her messages on the same night

  • Subsequently on the same the night, the male student allegedly sent her messages in an attempt to hit on her.
  • These messages allegedly include:

    • His reason for making a good boyfriend -- namely, that he is sexually experienced.
    • Why he wants to make friends with undergraduates -- specifically, that he is looking for a girlfriend and "liked them young".
    • Why he is currently taking a masters in NUS -- his fiance had “[run] away”, and the funds he had saved as down payment for a BTO flat were now being used to finance his degree.

  • However, the female student claims to have deleted the messages in a moment of panic.

Arranged for a meeting

  • Accordingly, the female student decided to arrange a meeting with him at a public space in order to emphasise that she is not interested in him.
  • At the second meeting:

    • The female student told the male student that she is uncomfortable with his attention.
    • He allegedly accused her of leading him on.
    • At one point, he asked the female student if he can kiss her.
    • Before the alleged victim left, the male student apparently asked her to refer her single friends to him.

Blocked alleged harasser on WhatsApp

On the same night of the meeting, the female student claimed to have received the following message from her alleged harasser:

Upon seeing this, she blocked the graduate student.

However, he allegedly then sent her the following text message:

"I hope that in our next life we could be classmates. I will want to know you since secondary school too."

More girls coming forward

The alleged victim then warned her female friends about her supposed harasser, and one of them had apparently come forward with a similar experience.

The female student additionally encouraged others who have shared her experience to make an official report in order to build up a case against the alleged perpetrator.

As it is, many of the post's commentators appeared to have encountered the same alleged harasser:

And it would seem that this is not the first story about him either.

It also appears that he has been known to hit the gym at times.
