They've opened an internal investigation into the case.

You might have heard by now about the 14-month-old baby who overdosed on codeine after being prescribed cough syrup that was not only not supposed to be for children under two years old, but was also with a dose more than four times the recommended amount for toddlers.

If you haven't, here's the story:

Company offers full reimbursement

Now the management of Qualitas Medical Group, the parent company of the clinic in question (which, by the way, is YSL Bedok Clinic & Surgery) has apologised for "any distress" that Lum and her one-year-old son went through.

In a statement sent to Mothership, the company said it is in touch with Lum and her family, and has offered to reimburse all of her additional incurred medical bills. Additionally, it said they extended an invitation to their paediatrics unit for further review... well, in the event Lum would still want to bring her son back to the same organisation that allegedly caused this horrific experience in the first place.

Qualitas told Mothership it is also investigating the case internally, and that it has assembled a team to review its safety procedures.

"We want the best for our patients and are relieved to hear that the infant has since recovered. We will continue to engage with the parents and wish the patient well."

Unaddressed questions

However, the statement does not say whether this investigation involves the Singapore Medical Council, or if it is cooperating with any ongoing investigation on their end.

A spokesperson for the company also would not say whether the doctor involved in this case will continue to see patients during the company's internal probe.

Here's their statement in full:

"The management of Qualitas Medical Group (“Qualitas”) refers to recent media mentions and online posts (“1-year-old baby overdoses on cough syrup after getting wrong prescription from Bedok clinic”, 27 November 2017) regarding a 14 month old patient who was treated at one of our clinics, YSL Bedok Clinic & Surgery on 22 November 2017.

We have been in contact with the child’s parents.

The management of Qualitas would like to apologise to the family for any distress that they went through.

Qualitas has out of goodwill offered to reimburse the child’s parents for all medical bills incurred as a result of this unfortunate incident. We invite the patient to our Paediatrics unit in Singapore for further reviews.

Qualitas has assembled a team to ensure that its safety procedures are reviewed and enforced.

Qualitas’ priority is to provide quality healthcare, where the patient’s health is of upmost importance to us. We continuously strive to improve our services offered to our patients and customers at our clinics.

We want the best for our patients and are relieved to hear that the infant has since recovered. We will continue to engage with the parents and wish the patient well."

Mothership has reached out to Qualitas for further clarification and will be updating this story if we receive any further information from them.
