S'pore River Cruise Lego set needs 10,000 supporters before it'll be reviewed for production

Lego Ideas brings anything to life, if it has enough support.

Singaporeans love Lego so much that, starved for the real thing, they've taken to re-creating iconic Singapore buildings with nothing but colourful little bricks.

Just look at what a few rainy Sunday afternoons have accomplished:

I mean just look at this work of art:

The McDonald's at East Coast Park (ECP) holds a special place in my heart. When I was a kid, my mother used to bring me to ECP and we would often pass by McDonald's. I recall as a child, I was fascinated by the vibrant colors of McDonald's. In those days, having a meal there is considered a luxury, thus I hardly do so. However, fun and laughter always filled the place, and gave me a happy and welcoming feeling, even if I was just passing by. As I grew older, the ECP McDonald's remained a part of my life. This is the place where I hanged out with close secondary school friends. This is where I nursed my wounds (from learning cycling) over a cooling drink. This is also the first place that I, as an NSman, gleefully invaded after a gruelling SAF marathon. This former ECP McDonald's is more than a fast food restaurant. It is the de facto hangout place to meet friends at ECP, the place to get a refreshing breakfast after a morning run and definitely a kids' favourite for holding birthday parties. Many Singaporeans grew up with the ECP McDonald's. It has in a way became a cultural icon. Even though it has been demolished, it will always remain one of the fondest memories for a generation of Singaporeans. But although there are a few limited run sets and custom models, there isn't an official Singapore-themed Lego set that is available worldwide. Until now. Maybe.

"River Cruise" set for Lego

Davide Sacramati is an Italian guy who's lived in Singapore for the past three years, working as a children's football coach.

Inspired by the recent Lego Piece of Peace World Heritage Exhibit, he wanted to design an official "River Cruise" set for Lego.

According to him:

"The inspiration for the River Cruise came from watching the Bumboats on the river in Singapore."

Sacramati submitted his idea as part of the Lego Ideas project, where any fan-submitted idea will be officially reviewed by Lego once it gets 10,000 supporters.

Some awesome sets have been produced under the Ideas banner, like the Adventure Time, Doctor Who, and Ghostbuster sets.

The good news is that Sacramati has more than a year to rally 10,000 supporters for the cause. The bad news is that he has just under 300 loyal fans right now, as of the afternoon of Oct. 20.

If you would like to show support, head over to the Lego Ideas website and vote for Sacramati's River Cruise set. You'll need a Lego Ideas ID or to sign up for one though.

And if it does get brought to life, let's hope that no one else releases a suspiciously similar design.
