The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said on Monday, Sept. 25, it is looking into whether it is feasible to build a cycling bridge over the Tampines Expressway to connect Tampines and Pasir Ris towns.

This is to support Tampines's growth as the regional employment centre in the east.

The image above is an artistic impression of how the cycling bridge will look like -- a future popular drone photography subject, for sure.

21km of cycling paths

As part of plans to transform Tampines estate into a walking and cycling town by 2022, the cycling path network there will be tripled from 6.9km to about 21km.

A cycling underpass to link Tampines with Simei may also be built, as well as trunk cycling routes linking Tampines to Changi Business Park and Singapore Expo Convention & Exhibition Centre.

It added that existing cycling paths will be widened, while additional signs and markings will be put up at bicycle crossings.

Existing infrastructure, such as bus stops, will also be redesigned, to better accommodate cyclists and pedestrians.

Three MRT stations, Tampines, Tampines East and Tampines West, will be connected to homes, schools, food centres and other amenities via the cycling network.

LTA said it will be calling for a tender for the projects.

The plans are similar to what has been done for Ang Mo Kio, Singapore’s first walking and cycling town.
