Halimah Yacob, who is Speaker of Parliament and a HDB flat dweller, has put up a video to address the nation celebrate the upcoming Hari Raya Puasa to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

The 62-year-old unionist-turned-politician is seen making the neighbourly rounds, meeting and greeting regular folk during the fasting month.

In the video, Halimah said Ramadan is the time of the year to uphold Singapore's multiracial identity.

Nothing out of the ordinary about that on its own, except that she is currently the unofficial front runner for a role that will require her to make the rounds, rally the people together and appear stately while addressing the nation in an effort to make a connection.

The mother of five children, who are in their 20s and 30s, is widely rumoured to be the most visible, if not, eligible candidate, for the upcoming presidential election in Singapore in September.

She has remained repeatedly coy (here and here) about her chances in the race for the largely ceremonial role as head of state.

Even if regular Singaporeans are unsure if she will even have a go at the presidency or if she's confident about her chances because she isn't saying, there is one thing Halimah is sure of: She can cook one mean lontong.

So, here's to Halimah Yacob, who embodies the wholesome image of the homely, moderate, everyday HDB flat-dwelling person, who can cook one mean lontong.
