A 26-year-old Malaysian woman, who pleaded guilty to a charge of dangerous driving for speeding with the car involved in the Tanjong Pagar crash that killed five people in February 2021, has been fined S$5,000 and has been disqualified from driving for three years.

Phoo Yi Lin, 26, admitted on Monday (Apr. 3) to previously driving the white BMW M4 coupe in a dangerous manner at 109km/h along Tanjong Pagar Road at about 5:35am on Feb. 13, 2021, The Straits Times reported.

District Judge Salina Ishak noted that Phoo had consumed alcohol before she drove the car that morning, although the amount of alcohol she had consumed was not disclosed, ST reported.

The speed she was driving at was 59km/h faster than the speed limit of the road, which was 50km/h.

She was one of the three people who took turns driving the car before Jonathan Long Junwei took over as the last driver, according to Traffic Police investigator Firdaus Suleiman at a coroner's inquiry into the accident in June 2022.

Long drove the car at an estimated 148km/h with four passengers, Teo Qi Xiang, 26; Elvin Tan Yong Hao, 28; Eugene Yap Zheng Min, 29; and Gary Wong Hong Chieh, 29 when the car crashed into a shophouse.

The car burst into flames, and five men were killed as a result of severe burns and other injuries.

Their deaths were ruled a misadventure during a coroner's inquiry on Aug. 24, 2022.

Phoo witnessed the accident with Raybe Oh — Long's then-girlfriend — and Park Se Jin, the owner of an eatery along Tanjong Pagar Road, which Long and his friends had visited earlier.

According to court records, Phoo had also applied to leave Singapore, but her request was denied.

According to Shin Min Daily News, Phoo said she regretted being peer pressured into doing such dangerous activities.

She said she had lost many dear friends in the accident, and that she had felt immense guilt for her actions.
