The Union of Security Employees (USE) has publicly revealed more details about the circumstances that culminated in a resident seen verbally abusing security officers at a condominium in Sin Ming.

According to a Facebook post on April 11, the condominium was revealed to be Thomson Grand at Sin Ming Walk.

What happened

The male resident, labelled as an "abuser" by USE, had parked his car at the residents’ parking area.

The initial news report of the incident revealed that the vehicle was a BMW, but the details of the exact condominium were left vague.

Tried contacting abuser 5 times

USE has since stated that on April 3 at about 1am, the duty security officer, who is only revealed to be Sheelan, noticed the illegally parked BMW.

He attempted to contact the abuser to move the vehicle, but failed after five attempts, according to USE.

Following the standard procedure, Sheelan proceeded to place a written notice on the vehicle belonging to the abuser.

Abuser claimed he owned a few units

At 7am on the same day, the abuser confronted Sheelan about the notice.

That was when he claimed that he owned a few units at the condominium and could park there even if he did not have a decal.

The abuser then left.

Tried contacting abuser 8 times

At 8:10am, the abuser returned and parked his vehicle at the same location.

Sheelan reported the matter to his supervisor, a personnel named Lydia, who then proceeded to issue another written notice at 9:20am.

She attempted again to contact the abuser but failed after eight times.

Wheel clamped

She then proceeded to clamp the vehicle at about 9:40am, as required by the condominium's by-laws.

At about 1:20pm, the abuser confronted Lydia and recorded the confrontation.

One of the residents reportedly shared this video with the media.

Abuser banged guardhouse glass panel

USE said it was shown the bodycam footage and it clearly showed the abuser banging the glass panel of the guardhouse, and also hurling insults at the officers, including berating them as being poor.

The man in blue, who was filmed in the video confronted by the abuser, is Derrick Foo, the operations manager.

Assist in making police report

USE said it will assist Lydia and Derrick to report the matter to the police.

The union added: "We reiterate that USE strongly condemns this act of abuse."

The personnel "were merely executing their tasks, which included enforcing the by-laws with respect to illegal parking", USE added.

"What the abuser did was unwarranted, and the personal insults were hurtful and shocking."

The union also said the Private Security Industry Act was enhanced in 2022 to offer security officers better protection against such kinds of abuses.

"USE hopes that this incident will be probed further and just punishment be served," its statement said.
