What's the cheapest price that one can get a bowl of bak kut teh in Singapore?

Given the inflated prices we've seen lately, most of us might give a pretty generous estimate.

However, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a cheaper deal than the S$2 that a man paid for his bak kut teh fix at a stall at Block 216 Bedok Food Centre and Market.

The meal

In a Facebook post by Ben Lim on Mar. 27 in the group Hawkers United - Dabao 2020, he shared some photos of his meal at Xian Jin Mixed Vegetable Rice stall.

Lim ordered one bowl of white rice (S$0.50) on top of the bak kut teh, and paid S$2.50 in total.

It seems Lim was so impressed by this "lobang" that he returned to the stall two weeks later for another round of bak but teh.

In a post on Apr. 10, he shared that for this visit, he opted for a plate of economic rice with three dishes (S$2) along with the bak kut teh, paying S$4 in total.

Lim wrote that he was satisfied with the filling meal, and was confident it could not get any cheaper when eating out.

Online users amazed at the price

A few "Hawkers United - Dabao 2020" group members were amazed at how cheap the meal was, and some expressed their appreciation for the hawker stall for keeping prices low.

One commenter asked the most important question -- whether it tasted good. To which Lim affirmed that he found it tasty.

Same stall that made headlines for S$2 economical rice

If the name of the stall "Xian Jin Mixed Vegetable Rice" sounds familiar, it's because it was previously featured for selling a three-dish cai png (economic rice) for S$2.

The stall owner also shared in a previous interview with Shin Min Daily News that prices have not been raised for the past 18 years since the stall started business.

She explained that keeping the prices low is her way of supporting the many elderly residents in the area.

Apart from economical rice and bak kut teh, the stall sells an assortment of dishes for S$2, including fish soup and congee.

Diners are expected to queue for up to half an hour during meal times.

The stall is open from Mondays to Fridays, from 8am to 3pm.
