Otters eating koi have been making the news in Singapore.

In Malaysia, however, it is humans eating koi that has captured people's attention.

A bizarre little tale was recently shared on Twitter by a Malaysian -- to the dismay of many who consider koi as pets.

What happened

According to the March 2 tweet, a power trip occurred in the woman's home in Malaysia, which caused the air pump that is used to aerate the water for the fish to stop working.

As a result, two of the koi fishes died.

Given that one man's meat is another man's poison, the woman who took to Twitter to air her family's laundry claimed that her father proceeded to prepare the dead koi for consumption and sent her a photo of the end product.

This gave the woman reason to question: "WHAT IS THIS BEHAVIOUR PA?"

Nicely fried

The photo showed four pieces of fish -- cut into halves at the belly -- fried till they were crispy and placed on a serving plate with visible oil stains.

None of the bright koi colours were visible, except the outline of the scales, which resemble those found on koi fishes.

The woman led on that the process of cooking the fish was difficult to wrap her head around.

She said her mother did not want to remove the scales from the fish and clean it, so her father did.

But her mother assisted in frying the fishes.

She wrote: “What’s weird is that she doesn’t want to clean the fish because she felt bad, but frying it and eating it is okay.”

The verdict of koi fish meat though?

The woman revealed in a follow-up tweet: "Mama says the flesh was sweet. Slightly on the bony side but overall she gives it a 👍🏽"

Responses

Responses to the woman's family's approach to pets were mostly to express a sense of disbelief and palpable disgust, while some took the time to commiserate, as they have been on the receiving end of a koi meal before.

One person responded: “My mum’s koi fish died a few months ago, she couldn’t clean and eat it so I did it while she just watched the rest of us eat it.”
