Kamala Harris officially has an orchid named after her.

The orchid-naming ceremony happened this morning (Aug. 23) at the Istana, where the U.S. vice president called on Halimah Yacob and had a joint press conference with Lee Hsien Loong.

This is Harris' first official visit to Singapore.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs had earlier announced on Aug. 20 that Harris will be receiving the honour of having a new orchid hybrid named after her.

The Straits Times reported that her orchid is called the "Papilionanda Kamala Harris" and has a purplish-pink colour.

Joe and Jill Biden's orchid

The U.S. president Joe Biden and his wife, Jill Biden, also had an orchid named after them when they visited the National Orchid Garden in 2013.

Joe Biden was visiting Singapore in his capacity as then-vice president, where he also made a surprise visit to Adam Road Hawker Centre.

Common practice for foreign dignitaries visiting Singapore

The naming of orchids, Singapore's national flower, after foreign politicians and dignitaries who visit Singapore is a common practice here.

Other dignitaries who have received this honour include the U.S.' Barrack and Michelle Obama, China's Xi Jinping and Princess Diana.

However, no orchid was named after former president Donald Trump when he visited Singapore for the Trump-Kim Summit in 2018.
