There's been no shortage of wildlife encounters in Singapore recently, with wild boars appearing in multiple locations across Singapore, and monitor lizards spotted feasting on a python carcass.

The country's beloved otters have also made an appearance—this time in a much more distinguished location like the grounds of the Istana.

Exploring the grounds

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong isn't immune to the charms of the furry creatures either.

On June 22, he shared a photo of a family of seven otters having a romp on the grassy plains of The Istana's vast grounds.

PM Lee said that it had been a while since the Istana had seen any visitors or dignitaries due to the Covid-19 situation, and the otters were thus a welcome sight.

The critters have apparently been exploring the grounds for the past six days.

Mothership understands that the family pictured below is likely the same family typically found at the Singapore Botanic Gardens.

PM Lee cheekily added that the otters were "totally ignoring safe distancing rules", considering their group considered of seven individuals, more than the current five pax capacity which the government has imposed on gatherings.

The otters have clearly been leading a rather carefree lifestyle as well.

"These playful creatures seem quite content to roam around the lawn, frolic in the ponds, and bask in the sun."

Otter sightings in the downtown area are not novel—the critters have been spotted on the streets of Orchard and near Concorde Hotel.

The otters likely use the extensive network of drainage canals to move about—the canal is also located near The Istana.
