Members of Parliament (MPs) speaking in Parliament House will be able to speak without wearing masks now, as new perspex screens have been installed around the speech podiums to ensure safe distancing while speaking.

Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin shared an image of one of these screens on social media on June 4, 2020, thanking the Parliament team for doing this.

MPs remove their masks while speaking in Parliament

This helps to protect the MP, as well as the other members of the House, as those who are speaking in Parliament will remove their masks temporarily.

On May 4, Tan announced in Parliament that all members must wear masks within Parliament House from May 4 onwards.

They will only be allowed to remove their masks temporarily while delivering speeches in the Chamber, so they can be heard clearly.

This was in line with the announcement made by Minister for National Development Lawrence Wong on April 14, which made it compulsory for everyone in Singapore to wear masks when they are in public.

This also complements other safe distancing measures that have been put in place for Parliament, including arrangements for MPs to be spaced apart.
