As the number of Covid-19 cases in Singapore rises sharply, more stringent safe distancing measures have been implemented in public places.

So far, this includes retail outlets, restaurants and temples.

And it seems that Parliament is not exempt as well.

MPs sitting apart

In a Facebook post by Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin, these safe distancing measures could be seen in full effect.

Tan said that in the midst of the Covid-19 outbreak, it was crucial for everyone to be vigilant and comply with the measures and precautions stated by the Multi-Ministry Taskforce.

As of Mar. 25, safe distancing measures have been implemented for all Members of Parliament while in the House.

As shown in photos shared by Tan, all members sat spaced apart, with at least one empty seat between them.

Members are also spread across two floors, with some occupying the top galleries.

Tan revealed that such an arrangement was a first.

Other measures implemented for MPs

According to a press release by Parliament, MPs will also use different routes to access the Parliament Chamber and meeting rooms.

They will also take their refreshments in separate groups and at separate locations.

These groups will also use separate restrooms.

The measures extend to the staff at the Secretariat and to all visitors to the House.

Other precautionary measures have already been implemented, which include temperature screenings and declaration of travel histories.

This is not the first time safe distancing has been observed by politicians, along with public servants.

At a press conference on Mar. 13, Ministers Gan Kim Yong and Lawrence Wong, and Director of Medical Services Kenneth Mak were seen sitting slightly further apart than in their previous press conferences.
