Pritam Singh thanks hands-on worker in AHTC who oversees common areas shared by 3,000 households

They have to serve residents by being friendly but firm.

The Workers' Party's Aljunied-Hougang Town Council has got hundreds of individuals working behind the scenes.

But that role actually makes these staff the frontliners who deal with municipal issues day in, day out, liaising with residents, contractors and agencies.

One such staff, who serves the multiple needs of constituents in a housing estate daily, is the property officer.

On June 29, WP chief Pritam Singh put up a post highlighting the contributions of regular folks who make the running of towns as smooth as possible.

The AHTC property officer featured, Angelina Tia, was described by Pritam as having to troubleshoot problems and managing different stakeholders.

The scope of the vocation sounds expansive on paper.

Each property officer, for example, is responsible for common areas shared by 2,000 to 3,000 households in the estate.

One outcome of the job is the extensive walking of the grounds to check for defects, and even inspecting overgrown trees to find out if they are healthy and in need of grooming.

In a month, each property officer can manage more than 300 cases covering various municipal matters, such as cleanliness, lift issues, neighbour disputes and pest or animal nuisance.

Pritam wrote:

Many of our Property Officers grow up very fast and they have to display traits such empathy and understanding when dealing with issues, while remaining firm - depending on the circumstances or issue at hand.

Ongoing tribute

Previously, Pritam shared three videos: The first about a resident's anonymous thank you note for the estate cleaner, the second a lift officer working for AHTC who makes it his personal mission to make life convenient for residents, and the third a project manager who does hands-on work on the ground.

These four videos so far have appeared on the new Aljunied-Hougang Town Council YouTube channel.
