Hours after announcing that five outlets will remain open during Singapore's "circuit breaker" period, Daiso Singapore retracted its notice and shut the outlets.

Garnered mix responses

In an Instagram post, the chain store said that the five outlets — located at IMM, Waterway Point, Plaza Singapura, Square 2, and Tiong Bahru Plaza — were indeed opened earlier in the day.

However, its management later retracted the notice and confirmed that all Daiso and Threepy stores in Singapore will remain closed from Apr. 7 to May. 4, or until further notice.

While the store did not explicitly state the reason for the u-turn, the post said that they had "garnered mixed responses both from public and entities" in the short time that the five outlets were opened.

"We understand that this is a critical period for Singapore and will comply with the measures," said Daiso.

Here is its full statement which was published on Instagram:

"Dear Customers,

We sincerely apologise for the opening notice that we displayed earlier in our social media mentioning that some of our stores are open throughout the Circuit Breaker period. The shops were opened earlier but all stores are now closed. In the short period of time it has garnered mixed responses both from public and entities, we understand that this is a critical period for Singapore and will comply with the measures.

The management has since retracted the notice and confirmed that ALL DAISO and THREEPPY Stores will be closed throughout this period, starting from 7 April to 4 May 2020 or until further notice.

We regret the inconvenience caused for every party and would like to thank you for your understanding and continued support."

Most retail outlets to close during "circuit breaker" period

On Apr. 3, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced that all retail outlets (except for those providing essential services) will have to close during the "circuit breaker" period starting Apr. 7.

This is to curb local transmission of the coronavirus.
