About 50 food delivery riders who rely on personal mobility devices for work showed up at the Meet-the-People session (MPS) in Jurong Spring ward on Thursday, Nov. 7 to look for Minister for Social and Family Development Desmond Lee.
Lee is a Jurong GRC MP overseeing the ward.
A majority of those present were wearing the green GrabFood uniform.
The riders were at the MPS to voice their concerns.
Some issues they brought up included not being able to pay off the instalments on their PMDs and being unable to obtain e-bikes or other vehicles that would allow them to continue working, CNA reported.
Retailers also showed up
Various e-scooter retailers also showed up at the MPS.
This group represented more than 30 businesses affected by the recent overnight ban on PMDs riding on footpaths.
The representatives presented a letter to Lee on behalf of the affected businesses, as they hoped to reach a compromise with the authorities and to reverse the regulations enacted, CNA also reported.
One of their requests is for PMDs to be allowed on roads, with speeds capped at 25kmh.
Another suggestion is to to convert more footpaths to shared paths.
Lee told those at the MPS that the concerns raised would be presented on Friday to the Ministry of Transport and the Land Transport Authority.
Lee told CNA: “I’m from MSF (Ministry of Social and Family Development), so we want to make sure if they have urgent concerns regarding their livelihood, we will be in a position to help them.”
Third time PMD users have showed up at MPS
This was the third time PMD users have showed up at the MPS to look for parliamentarians.
On Tuesday, Nov. 5, some 30 delivery riders met with Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam in the Chong Pang ward of Nee Soon GRC.
On Wednesday, Nov. 6, about 50 riders tried to look for Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in his Teck Ghee ward in Ang Mo Kio GRC.
