A no-holds-barred review of McDonald’s S’pore Choco Banana Pie

It tastes like it should.

There are some things in life that go together very well.

Being wronged and exacting revenge.

A shower in the middle of a hot, humid day.

Feeling dog tired and falling asleep by 10pm.

And what do all these pairings have in common?

Yes, contrast.

The taste of food is mostly derived from smell.

Without smell, it is hard to fathom what one is even eating.

But one of the most overlooked aspects of tasty food comes from its texture.

This is where contrast is everything.

It explains why tarts, goreng pisang, battered fish, or virtually anything that is soft on the inside and hard on the outside -- vice versa if it is guacamole and tortilla chips -- makes the flavour more pronounced.

Choco Banana Pie easily best McDonald's pie

So, is the new McDonald's Choco Banana Pie any good?

The short answer is, yes.

This is how it is advertised:

This is how it really looks, without filter or saturating the photo:

Close enough.

Verdict

Taste-wise, the Choco Banana Pie ought to be more than enough proof that two fillings in a pie should be standard protocol moving forward, since the previous McDonald’s white chocolate strawberry cream pie was also a winner with its paired fillings.

The Choco Banana Pie can also be considered a flavour upgrade.

Earlier in 2019, McDonald's had the chocolate pie, which was chocolate crust with chocolate custard filling.

The chocolate-induced-momentary-lapse-in-all-processing-faculties overkill taste was good from the first to the last bite.

But a regular flaky crust with chocolate filling?

That's contrast.

A regular flaky crust with chocolate filling and with banana?

That's more contrast.

And more pairings, as this is what your tongue tastes:

Chocolate → Banana

Banana → Crust

Crust → Banana

The ripen banana adds another layer to the one-dimensional chocolate bloc and gives the overall mouthfeel a tinge of ripen fruity taste to accentuate variety.

And paying S$1.50 for a taste of variety is worth it.
