Chinese YouTuber Ms Yeah, whose real name is Zhou Xiaohui, has agreed to pay compensation to the families of two girls, after a tragedy allegedly involving one of her popular cooking tutorials.

Accident with popcorn maker

Two girls, identified as Zhezhe, 14, and Xiaoyu, 12, appeared to have copied a video tutorial on DIY popcorn making.

However, the apparatus they had constructed exploded suddenly, leaving both of them severely injured.

The accident took place on Aug. 22, 2019.

Zhezhe passed away from her injuries, while Xiaoyu is in need of cosmetic surgery.

The original video has also been taken down.

Zhou paid compensation but denied any wrongdoing

Representatives of Zhou have met the families of both victims, and have agreed to pay them an undisclosed amount, according to BBC.

However, despite paying compensation, Zhou maintained that her video was not to blame for their injuries.

Zhou denied that the girls were replicating her video, and claimed that they had attempted a different method.

She also emphasised that that her videos are not meant to be instructional.

BBC reported that Zhou will cover the 12-year-old's hospital bills, although it is unclear whether she will pay any further compensation.

Zhou's cousin, who is one of her representatives, added that they would provide financial assistance to the families "regardless of who was right and who was wrong."
