Stories of mascots and couples usually end in one of two ways.
It either warms the heart, or ends in heartbreak.
Here's a story that ends in heartbreak.
Mascot surprise gone wrong
On July 19, a tweet went viral in Japan, with about 19,500 retweets and 80,400 likes.
Posted by Twitter user @T_Radiosonde, it tweeted four photos that purportedly depicted a man dressed in a bear mascot finding his girlfriend with another man at a food stall in China.
The post also claimed that the man had travelled over 2,400km to surprise his girlfriend.

Translation:
"A couple separated by a distance of 2,400km.
A boyfriend showed up in a bear costume to give a surprise but ended up catching an affair in the process."
Breakdown of photos
The first photo shows the man in costume supposedly realising his girlfriend was in the arms of another man.

Subsequently, the second photo shows the man looking at the couple, sans the costume's head, with the duo looking back at him.
Meanwhile, a staff at the stall can also be seen covering her face with her hand.

The third photo then showed the man putting on the costume head and walking off, while the woman ran after him.
Throughout it all, the stall's staff was covering her face with her hand.

The last photo then showed the woman hugging the man while he is in costume.

Japanese Twitter users react
Many Japanese Twitter users reacted to the photos with a mixture of fury and disgust directed at the woman -- as the scenes were hard to bear.

"I'm pissed looking at the last picture of the girlfriend hugging the guy."

"I can't accept the fourth (last) picture."

"He's being hugged by a girl who was hugged by another guy just a minute ago."

"It's gonna be fine since he'll be taking a bath later on."
One Japanese netizen also highlighted the staff's reaction to the scene.

"The staff be like oops~"
One Twitter user however, was of the opinion that going out with the other boyfriend would be better instead.

"If it's me, I'll go out with (the other) boyfriend."
Scene could have been staged
Of course, there's also the possibility that this entire exchange might very well be staged, considering how some things are not really what they seem to be in China.
