They just can't catch a break, can they?
Stefano Gabbana, co-founder of Italian fashion house Dolce & Gabbana, allegedly described China as a “country of s***” in an Instagram chat that was leaked late 2018.
It sparked howls of protest and accusations of racism in China.
This led to Gabbana and Domenico Dolce to apologise publicly in a video, which did not exactly successfully appease the Chinese.
Backlash on Year of Pig designed shirts
With that hullabaloo still subsiding, Dolce & Gabbana recently released a series of menswear in celebration of the Year of Pig for this Chinese New Year.
The new apparel consists of shirts and hoodies bearing pig designs, which cost S$490 to S$1,300:
The grey, white, red and yellow cotton T-shirts cost S$490, while this black design costs S$590.
The hoodies come in three designs:
Backlash again
This new line of D&G clothing has only poured fuel to the simmering fire.
Not everyone in China has forgotten about what happened previously and they are making their feelings known with this new release.
The angry comments mostly centre on the brand's attempt to woo Chinese consumers back after the racist remarks made by its co-founder, as well as lashing out against the exorbitant prices of the apparel.
Here are some screenshots of the comments:
Stef Gabbana is really crazy right........Dolce why don't you split up with him?!
@DolceGabbana Really shameless! Insult Chinese and now you are bootlicking China again!
Dolce gabbana what are you trying to convey with this ugly AF Year of Hog design ah? ?then will use money to buy dolce gabbana
Stefano Gabbana insulted China once again. Really, Dolce & Gabbana whoever wants to buy just buy but I will not buy.
Not even the primary school kids in China use 'sh*t' to scold one another, can't believe this brand is so childish, I think it is both hilarious and pathetic. The design is so ugly, bring it home to use as a rag, your China daddy will take it as a child's ignorant act.
Not worth it
Some commenters also questioned the worth of these ordinary-looking shirts.
