Hong Kong has a well-documented housing situation.
But photographer Benny Lam's "Trapped" series on Hong Kong's coffin homes was particularly jarring.
The crisis has mostly come about due to the exorbitantly high prices that the government sells their land to developers, which in turn leads to exorbitantly high rentals.
Another reminder of this came about from an innocuous post by Facebook user Stacy Liou.
Travel
Liou is in the midst of documenting her 180-day vacation in 2019.
On Day 37, she arrived on the Hong Kong leg of her trip on January 6, 2019.
Here she is at the airport after an hour of flight delay.
She was in for a slight shock however, when she took her first bus trip and made her way to her motel.
And here's her vantage point from the bed.
Oof.
Her caption reads as such:
"我又訂到很靠杯的hostel
不到1坪半
然後行李箱進不來要抬到床上
笑歪"
Which roughly translates to:
"I booked a really bad (a vulgarity was used) hostel again.
The room size was so small that the luggage had to be placed on the bed. LOL."
That particular Facebook post has garnered over 2,500 likes and 2,800 shares, in comparison to the usual 40 to 50 for her other pictures.
To Liou's credit though, she seems to be enjoying the heck out of Hong Kong.

History, unlike statues, can't be painted over. Here's why the Stamford Raffles statue got painted over anyway.

We sometimes wish we could undo past decisions. This writer's decision to go to a polytechnic wasn't one of those.
