If you ever feel confused about the specifics of ordering Kopi from the Kopitiam near your home, this video is for you.

Uploaded to Facebook by Ivan Ai, the video features a segment from Episode 4 of We the Citizens (WTC), a Toggle Original series.

From their official Toggle website, WTC is a sketch comedy based on the everyday Singaporean experience and "our uniquely Singaporean quirks".

It has since gone viral with 9,926 shares as of writing.

Here it is:

If you can't watch it because you're saving data, here's the gist of it.

A drinks stall uncle, played by actor Jeremy Chan, recounts his experience dealing with a lady who tried to order Kopi Kosong. (coffee made with condensed milk, without sugar)

Chan's character immediately launches into an educational tirade about how there is no such thing as Kopi Kosong.

Customer: Can I get a Kopi Kosong?

Drinks Stall Uncle: There's no Kopi Kosong.  Kopi is with condensed milk. Kopi Siew Dai has less condensed milk. Kopi-C has evaporated milk and sugar. Kopi-C Kosong has evaporated milk and no sugar. Kopi-O has no milk, only sugar. Kopi-O Kosong has no milk and no sugar, you understand?

So there's no Kopi Kosong! What you want?

Customer: Coke.

In other words

If you still don't get it, here's the straightforward explanation - Kosong means no sugar. As Kopi is made with just condensed milk, there's no way to take away the sugar like you would with a Kopi-O Kosong.

Besides, the condensed milk is already sweet - so if you want your Kopi to be less sweet, order it as Kopi Siew Dai.

Today we learned.
