The late Corporal First Class Liu Kai, who passed away during a training exercise, is the third tragedy to hit the Liu family this year.
Liu's grandmother passed away in May 2018 while his mother was recently diagnosed with cancer in April, according to Shin Min Daily News (SMDN).
SMDN noted that when Liu's mother arrived at the mortuary in a wheelchair on Nov. 4 to claim Liu's body, she let out a shrill cry that echoed though the mortuary.
Liu, 22, who studied in Presbyterian High School and Nanyang Junior College, had already attained a place in the Singapore Management University.
Liu's older sister Liu Hong told the paper that the family was informed to rush to the hospital on Nov. 3 without any information.
They only found out about his death through the announcement on Facebook.
Liu Hong also said her mother's condition is deteriorating daily.
She added that this latest tragedy is extremely painful for the family.
Liu's father said that his son was filial and always nagged at his parents to take care of themselves before he went out, and that his death is especially painful for Liu's mother:
"My wife doted on him. After hearing the news, she almost fainted several times."
Liu Hong also told SMDN that she hopes the SAF will provide a compassionate compensation for the family:
"My mother has stopped working because of her condition. My father is an odd-job labourer who had made plans to retire.... Everyone thought that once Liu Kang finishes university, he would find a stable job. Who knew that this would happen?"
The incident is the third National Service training-related death in 14 months.
