The family of late NSF CFC Liu Kai is urging Singaporeans to attend his wake and cremation service.

Liu passed away on November 3 after an incident with a Bionix vehicle during training.

As reported by Channel NewsAsia (CNA), Liu's sister (who wished to remain unnamed) told the media that his death fell on her birthday.

It is the latest painful twist for a family that has faced a series of unfortunate encounters this year.

This was what his sister told CNA:

"As a family … we would like to invite all Singaporeans to Liu Kai's memorial and final send-off tomorrow and let Liu Kai see, for the last time, the people of Singapore."

Ms Liu was visibly moved as she told the media at her brother's wake that he made a sacrifice for his country:

"I sincerely urge and hope (for)...all Singaporeans...[to] come and see my brother, Liu Kai (at) his wake and...tomorrow's cremation. He actually sacrificed for his country - Singapore - so I strongly hope that I can see you all come here."

In response to queries by a Chinese reporter, Ms Liu said that Liu Kai had a heart of gold, especially for those around him:

"My brother cared a lot for his fellow church members. Not only did he attend weekly services, he actually had planned on heading to Taipei to take part in missionary work with underprivileged children.

He was also very hardworking in school. Not only did he pushed himself to study late into the night, he would also help his fellow classmates with their revision, even sharing his notes with them.

He was a very warm and kind child. I'm very proud of him because his army mates like him a lot. During training he would endure the hardships without a single complaint. So his army mates looked up to him."

Ms Liu also added that she is very proud of him for his honourable act of sacrificing for his country. "Because of this, we believe that Mindef, the COI (Committee of Inquiry), and the Police will give us a just explanation," she said.

The Straits Times (ST) reported that while Liu hailed from China, he had taken up Permanent Residency status here in Singapore.

Liu attended Presbyterian High School, and later Nanyang Junior College. His ex-teacher from Presbyterian High, Mr Yann Wong told ST that Liu was an above-average student.

Shin Min Daily News reported on November 4 that Liu had attained a place at Singapore Management University (SMU).

There is little detail online about Liu Kai's wake except that it will be held Woodlands Crescent.

Liu leaves behind his parents and two older sisters.
