If you look 35 and under, congrats, your purchase of alcohol and cigarettes at 7-Eleven might be subjected to a identity check soon.

Here's the post on November 1 by 7-Eleven.

In case you can't read it, here's what it says.

We will be conducting ID checks on customers who look 35 years old and below, before the purchase of tobacco and/or alcohol products.

We seek your support and understanding to treat our team members with mutual respect as we reserve the right to safeguard their well-being. We apologise for the inconvenience caused.

Reactions

Some had revelations on being asked to show their IC.

Others saw a glaring loophole.

For example:

Which means this might lead to people actually wanting to show their IDs.

So others proposed a better solution.

One question unified all the commenters though.

Not new

As taken aback as some might be by the announcement, this initiative is not exactly a new thing.

Back in 2013, 7-Eleven did a trial where they checked the ICs of people who looked younger than 40 before purchases of alcohol and cigarettes.

Back then, a Dairy Farm Singapore spokesperson told Straits Times that the trial was meant to review and enhance their system to comply with sales of age-restricted products.
