Vocativ is an American media and tech company.
According to them, the platform "uses intelligent technology, smart journalists and the wisdom of the crowd to find story leads and angles no other news organization can".
On Oct. 1, they published a video that appeared to miss some of their lofty descriptions.
Here's the video.
In case you can't see it.
In it they went through the traditional preparation method of century eggs.
Which would be a nice, interesting look at a culturally distinct method of preparing eggs.
But that didn't seem to be what Vocativ wanted to go for.
How do we know?
Because the preparation portion of the video took up all of 16 seconds, before lapsing back into clips of Westerners nearly retching/ retching their guts out.
Like such.
And this arguably rather adorable reaction.
They spent another few seconds giving "balance" to the video.
Before concluding with this rather perplexing ending statement.
What is the original? And do they know Asians eat original eggs too?
Which all resulted in a very vibrant discussion in the comments section.
Angry reacts
The first, and most pertinent criticism was Vocativ's usage of the word “rotten”.
With one giving a helpful parallel to more westernised food.
Another point of contention was the apparent lack of context in how the century eggs were actually eaten in Asia countries. Namely, with porridge.
While others denied a smell in the first place.
And others took to burning Vocativ staff members directly.
With this one Singaporean mic dropper rounding it off.
Ouch.
