US President Donald Trump arrives in Singapore for his first-ever visit here

A very busy (and memorable) day for Vivian Balakrishnan.

In another milestone for Singapore-U.S. relations, U.S. President Donald Trump has arrived in Singapore on Sunday, June 10 evening, ahead of the greatly-anticipated June 12 summit between him and North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un.

Here's a faraway shot of him disembarking from Air Force One, the U.S. presidential plane, at Paya Lebar airbase:

And here's Minister Vivian Balakrishnan shaking hands with him after he disembarked from the plane:

Kim arrived earlier Sunday at Changi Airport:

And he hardly had time to settle in at the St Regis hotel before moving off in his motorcade to meet Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the Istana:

Air Force One landed in Singapore at about 8:25 pm, and Trump then headed to the Shangri-La Hotel on Orange Grove Road, where he will be staying during his time here.

Minister Vivian sure has had a busy day.

As most of you would know by now, Trump is scheduled to meet with Kim in a summit starting Tuesday, the first meeting of which will be held at Sentosa's Capella Hotel at 9am.

It's going to be the first time in history that the two nation's leaders will meet.

Trump and Lee

This is also Trump's first visit to Singapore since his election as America's 45th President in Nov. 2016, as well as his inauguration in Jan. 2017. Trump will also meet with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, even though it won't be their first time meeting, on Monday, June 11.

PM Lee did make a state visit to Washington DC and met Trump for the first time at the White House in October last year.

On that occasion, Trump referred to Lee as a "highly respected man" and said that the "friendship has never been stronger" between the U.S. and Singapore:

Trump will have a one-on-one meeting with Lee at noon on June 11. They will then have an expanded bilateral meeting and working lunch at the Istana.

Here's hoping this will turn out better than the summit he just came from

Trump has also had a pretty busy schedule, having arrived from Canada where he was in La Malbaie, in Quebec, for the G7 summit.

The G7 happens to be a gathering of the leaders of seven of the most advanced economic powers in the world.

Unfortunately, a BBC report dated Saturday said it concluded in "acrimony", as Trump retracted his endorsement of its joint statement. Trump said he had instructed his officials "not to endorse the communique as we look at tariffs on automobiles".

Despite historically close relations between Canada and the U.S., Trump also berated Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Twitter.

Trump also went against the position of his allies by calling for Russia to be re-admitted to the Group during an impromptu press conference at the summit.

"I think it would be an asset to have Russia back in. I think it would be good for the world. I think it would be good for Russia. I think it would be good for the United States. I think it would be good for all of the countries of the current G7. I think the G8 would be better."

Russia was suspended from the group in 2014, then known as the G8, after a majority of the members opposed its annexation of Crimea from Ukraine.
