On May 23, road traffic community Beh Chia Lor uploaded a video of an accident involving a pedestrian and a lane splitting motorcyclist:

According to the dashcam footage, the accident occurred on April 25 at 5.57pm.

The scene appears to be at Yishun Ave 2, along the stretch where Khatib Mrt Station is located and opposite the Yishun Stadium.

In case you missed it:

Pedestrians turn away

Unfortunately, a couple of pedestrians were caught on camera turning away from the injured parties after witnessing the accident.

This did not sit too well with the people who have watched the video:

Right and wrong

The accident also had Facebook users debating whether the fault lies with the pedestrian or the motorcyclist.

Some said that it was the woman's fault for jaywalking:

However, a Google street view of the location shows that pedestrians are allowed to cross the road:

It is not considered jaywalking if a pedestrian is more than 50m away from the nearest crossing, according to Road Traffic Rules:

Not careful enough

On the other hand, some users commented that it was the motorcyclist's fault for lane-splitting and not being careful enough:

Lane-splitting is when motorcyclists rides between lanes or slow-moving vehicles.

It is not technically illegal in Singapore, but reckless driving can earn you a fine of up to S$5,000 and/ or imprisonment of up to 12 months.

While there is not conclusive end to the debate at the moment, the bottom line is: use the roads safely.
