Bye, bye: Lim Swee Say, Yaacob Ibrahim & Lim Hng Kiang retire from Cabinet

Farewell to Lim Swee Say who gave the betterest soundbites.

The latest Cabinet reshuffle will see three ministers retire from Cabinet from May 1, 2018.

They are

  1. Minister for Manpower, Lim Swee Say.
  2. Minister for Trade and Industry (Trade), Lim Hng Kiang.
  3. Minister for Communications and Information, Yaacob Ibrahim.

Both Lim Swee Say and Yaacob entered politics as Members of Parliament (MP) in 1997.

Lim Hng Kiang entered earlier as MP in 1991.

All three took on various portfolios in the government throughout their political career.

Here's what the Cabinet will miss about them:

Lim Swee Say

Arguably the most personable one among the three, Lim is known to connect with the working masses.

He led the National Trade Union Congress (NTUC) as its Secretary-General for one whole decade before going over to the Manpower Ministry in 2015.

His time working with the labour movement brought out some of his quirkiest quotes in his push to enhance the working man's quality of life such as:

  1. "Better, Betterer, and Betterrest"
  2. "Upturn the Downtown"
  3. "Be a Nation of Bottleneck-Breakers"

And of course, his latest Quick Math:

We don't know either. But they're definitely memorable.

Yaacob Ibrahim

Yaacob was perhaps most well-known for that infamous "once-every-50-years-flood" quote, after the Bukit Timah canal burst its banks in 2009.

2009 Bukit Timah flooding. Via Good Morning Yesterday.

As minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs, Yaacob was also the one we see trotting out with the assurances each time a religiously-incited conflict comes to the fore, like how he came out to thank Cornerstone Church for the apology regarding a potentially inflammatory incident.

Here is his farewell message:

Lim Hng Kiang

Possibly one of the most low-key politicians in the modern era, Lim rose up the ranks, first in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) and then through various statutory boards and ministries before taking the lead at the Ministry of Trade and Industry in 2004.

As Health Minister in 2003, Lim received flak during the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak for his slow response, which might have led the economy into a recession.

After the crisis, he was reassigned to be a minister in the Prime Minister's Office.

Future ahead

All three will still serve as MPs in their respective constituencies: Lim Swee Say in East Coast GRC, Yaacob in Jalan Besar GRC, and Lim Hng Kiang in West Coast GRC.

No word yet on whether they will be staying on as MPs after the next election.
