The American public now has the highest regard for China in almost 30 years.
This is a contrast from American policymakers who increasingly see China as a threat.
Highest favourable ratings in almost 30 years
According to a Gallup poll -- Gallup is known for its public opinion polls conducted worldwide -- released in early March, 53% of Americans now have a favourable view of China, with the rating rising above 50% for the first time in almost 3 decades.
The number increased by 3 percentage points from 50% last year.
Ratings plunged after Tiananmen Square crackdown
Americans' favourable rating towards China plunged in the immediate aftermath of China's crackdown on pro-democracy protestors at Tiananmen Square.
From 72% a week after President George H.W. Bush visited China in early 1989, the number dropped sharply to 34% later in the same year after the crackdown.

China noticed the rise in ratings
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi cited the poll last Thursday (Mar 15), saying that "cooperation is the main thrust of China-US relations":
"I hope people will pay more attention to such positive things."
