Halimah Yacob spotted in Kuala Lumpur on New Year's Eve looking at tudungs, M'sian claims

At RM10 each, it must have been a steal.

Some of us spent New Year's Eve sleeping in the rain or watching the annual countdown show.

But Singapore's president, Halimah Yacob, was allegedly spotted in Kuala Lumpur on Dec. 31, 2017, by at least one hawk-eyed Malaysian.

Shopping for tudung

In a Facebook post uploaded by Nazerrul Hazwan on Dec. 31, the Malaysian claimed that he was walking around town in Malaysia's capital when he saw President Halimah looking for tudungs.

For our non-Malay speaking friends, here's a translation of Nazerrul's post:

"While walking around town earlier today, I saw this auntie choosing some tudungs. I wanted to call for her, but I wouldn't know what to say.

This auntie may be a big person, but she's very humble. There was a First Lady outlet (a Muslim fashion conglomerate) right in front of her, but instead of going there, she was looking through the RM10 tudungs at a roadside store. She was walking pretty freely too. Perhaps if I asked her out to chill over a cup of coffee, she would say yes.

Many people around her didn't approach her because they don't recognise who she is.

Do you know who is this auntie?"

Which part of KL is this?

In case you were wondering where exactly President Halimah or Halimah-lookalike was, it's Jalan Bunus, a tourist attraction in KL filled with affordable textiles and headscarves -- which go for RM10 (S$3) each.

Here's a street view of the exact location where she was discreetly photographed:

Praises for Halimah

Thanks to how easygoing she looked in the shared image, many had praises for her.

"President of Singapore, Halimah Yacob.

Singapore's first head of state to live in public housing while in office. So humble."

"President of Singapore, Mdm Halimah Yaacob... She seems like a simple person."

We have reached out to the Istana for a response.
