Bukit Timah residents choked by neighbour's 100kg, 16-hour bak kwa BBQ for family of 300

Residents in Tham Soong Avenue in Bukit Timah are allegedly choking to death on smoke from an epic barbecue.

According to Shin Min Daily News, one family there would barbecue more than 100kg of bak kwa in the courtyard of their private property whenever Chinese New Year is around the corner.

The affected resident, Madam Huang, said the thick smoke would cause her elderly parents to cough uncontrollably.

The smoke was so bad the police were alerted.

Epic BBQ

Madam Huang said the neighbour would start barbecuing on weekends for hours on end.

On Sunday, Jan. 21, the neighbour allegedly started around 7am and ended at 2pm.

There was once the barbecue went on from 8am in the morning to 12am midnight -- 16 hours in total.

Madam Huang said: "I tried asking her to stop barbecuing once, and she promised that she would not do it this year."

"However, yesterday, she started doing it again."

"We haven't been able to rest well because of them."

One member of the barbecue household, Madam Liu, 60, said she does her own bak kwa barbecue as there are 300 family members.

She also explained why she does not buy bak kwa from shops: "It very expensive to buy bak kwa from shops outside, and we are unable to ensure the quality as well."

"So we prefer to prepare our own in our home to prepare for the Lunar New Year."
