How to watch The Last Jedi, the new Star Wars movie (Spoiler-free)

Is The Last Jedi worth watching? Absolutely.

The new Star Wars movie is out.

Fans have waited two years for The Last Jedi to be officially released in Singapore on Dec. 14, 2017.

And non-fans don't care.

So, here's everything you've never wanted to ask about the new Star Wars movie, because you don't know where to start:

1. Why is the Star Wars franchise so confusing?

There were the original three Star Wars movies from 1977 to 1983.

Then in 1999, director George Lucas decided to revisit the franchise and create three more movies. But these were prequels to the original three movies, as they were set further back in time.

These three new movies showed the rise of the Star Wars "bad guy" -- Darth Vader, and wrapped up in 2005.

2. Then what happened?

Everything was quiet for a while, until Disney bought Lucas' film company Lucasfilm for US$4 billion in 2012.

It was a hefty chunk of change, but Disney would own the rights to one of the most beloved film franchises in the world.

3. So these new movies are made by Disney?

Yeah that's right. They started in 2015 with The Force Awakens, with a mix of old and new actors and Lost show-runner JJ Abrams in the director's chair.

Force Awakens is set a few decades after Return of the Jedi.

4. Ok you've lost me. So, where does another Star Wars movie, Rogue One, from 2016, fit in?

Here's how the movies relate to each other -- in chronological order, with their original release dates.

  • Episode 1: The Phantom Menace (1999)
  • Episode 2: Attack of the Clones (2002)
  • Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith (2005)
  • Rogue One (2016)
  • Episode 4: A New Hope (1977)
  • Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
  • Episode 6: Return of the Jedi (1983)
  • Episode 7: The Force Awakens (2015)
  • Episode 8: The Last Jedi (2017)

Rogue One doesn't have the "Episode" prefix. It's what fancy Hollywood types call an "interquel".

5. I think I get it. But is this new movie really worth the long queues and the crowded theatres?

Early word-of-mouth has been very positive.

I went to a sneak preview screening at Shaw Lido and I can tell you more.

6. Wait, I don't want to know any spoilers!

No spoilers, promise.

The Last Jedi picks up immediately where The Force Awakens ended.

Rey (Daisy Ridley), the young protagonist of the previous movie, has found the legendary Jedi Master Luke Skywalker.

Luke was the young protagonist of the original trilogy, played by Mark Hamill back in the 1980s. Now the character has aged with the actor, and he's an old man who's in hiding from the rest of the galaxy.

7. What else?

The evil First Order are led by the Supreme Leader Snoke and his angsty apprentice Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). They are hunting down the Resistance, a ragtag group of rebels who include soldiers Finn (John Boyega) and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac).

The Resistance are led by our beloved General Princess Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher). Leia was portrayed by the iconic Fisher, who died in Dec. 2016. This will be her last movie appearance.

8. That's heavy.

She gives a great performance.

But Star Wars is also about change, and that's embodied by the younger actors who have been given substantial roles in the movie.

Rey, Finn, Poe are joined by Rose Tico, a newcomer played by Vietnamese-American Kelly Marie Tran. They reflect Hollywood's increasing diversity, they do a great job of portraying complex characters.

The film manages to strike a balance between paying homage to the previous films and cast, while making it clear that this is just the beginning of an awesome new story with great young actors.

9. How does it look?

Absolutely gorgeous.

Director Rian Johnson (Looper, Breaking Bad) splits the action up among very distinct settings. Scenes take place on a lonely island in the middle of a sea, an icy tundra planet, a futuristic city, and fiery battles in the cold depths of space.

There's one moment in particular where the audience is left stunned -- you could literally hear a pin drop as everyone tried to process what they've just seen, which has never been done before in the Star Wars films.

10. Ok, I just might check it out now.

Yeah it's a pretty good movie. In a ranking of Star Wars movies, The Empire Strikes Back remains the best of them all but The Last Jedi comes very, very close. I'd put it just under A New Hope for a strong third place finish.

It is a bit long at two-and-a-half hours, and you could argue that there were some scenes that could have been trimmed. Still, on the whole it's a movie that both newcomers and veterans of the franchise will appreciate.

Oh, and there are these super cute penguin-type critters named porgs. If you're bringing a kid, they will want a toy plushy porg once the movie is over.
