Carrie Fisher died on Tuesday morning (Dec, 28) following a massive heart attack onboard a flight from London to Los Angeles last week. She was 60.
Fisher's mother, actress Debbie Reynolds, wrote on Facebook, thanking "everyone who has embraced the gifts and talents of my beloved and amazing daughter".
She said that she was "grateful for your thoughts and prayers that are now guiding her to her next stop".
"It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning," Simon Halls, a spokesperson for Fisher's family, said in a statement to People magazine.
To Star Wars fan, Fisher was Star Wars royalty, acting as the iconic Princess Leia in the original Star Wars trilogy and last year's Episode VII Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The daughter of renowned entertainers Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher in 1956, Fisher made her big screen debut in 1975's Shampoo.
She was only 19 when the first installment of the Star Wars was filmed.
"Carrie was one-of-a-kind, brilliant, original," Harrison Ford, who played Han Solo alongside Fisher, said in a statement. "Funny and emotionally fearless. She lived her life, bravely. My thoughts are with her daughter Billie, her mother Debbie, her brother Todd and her many friends. We will all miss her."
Throughout her career, Fisher was open about her struggles with mental illness -- she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder –-- and drug use, admitting that she had abused cocaine throughout the filming of The Empire Strikes Back.
Offscreen, Fisher was a scriptwriter and an author of several books. She was recently on tour to promote her latest book, The Princess Diarist.
Fellow Star Wars cast members and celebrities have used social media to pay their tribute to Fisher.
Mark Hamill, who was Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars films, wrote a heartfelt message to Fisher, thanking her "for the laughter, the wisdom, the kindness & even the bratty, self-indulgent crap" his beloved space-twin gave him through the years.
