Couple does alien pose from Channel 8 drama in wedding photoshoot but doesn't really love the show

They are not huge fans of Channel 8 dramas but the quirky pose stuck in their minds.

If you have been following Channel 8 dramas, you would be aware of the show currently being aired from 9pm to 10pm daily - My Friends From Afar.

The plot revolves around aliens from a faraway planet disguising themselves as humans to blend in in a Singaporean neighbourhood.

Instead of replenishing their energy by consuming food, these aliens can charge their energy stores by drawing from solar energy.

To do that, they strike somewhat over-the-top poses, like this:

The aliens are shown doing this pose, one hand holding their ear and the other hand pointing to the sky, in every episode.

For regular watchers of the show, the reference is obvious.

Appropriating the alien pose

On Dec. 27, Channel 8 posted a video on Facebook showing how some people were featuring the alien pose in their pictures:

One photo, however, really stood out.

It was of a wedding photo where the couple (along with the best men and bridesmaids) did the pose.

The wedding photoshoot took place at Lorong Halus, and the shot was taken from across a water body.

This is the Instagram post:

A pose that came to mind

Even for die-hard fans of local TV dramas, few take it to the extreme of immortalising a piece of it in their wedding photos and videos.

We got in touch with the groom, Yeong Guo Hong, to find out more about the photo.

Yeong shared that they did not specifically request that the pose be featured:

"It's more like we were asked to think of a pose and this was one which came to mind."

Photographer for the shoot, Andri Tei, also told Mothership.sg that wedding photoshoots are typically geared toward natural, candid shots rather than deliberate poses.

Hence, such posed photos were the exception rather than the norm:

"In terms of couple's requests, we hardly get any that will ask/demand for a certain kind of pose...I guess this is one of the rare few that we do."

Fans of the drama?

Yeong confessed that he and his wife are "not particularly huge fans of Channel 8 dramas," but some, such as My Little Nyonya and When Duty Calls, really got them hooked.

He does not think My Friends From Afar has the same depth of content as those dramas he listed, nor is it as compelling.

However, the interesting premise of the show "provides a good filler for [them]". The quirky pose also stuck:

"My wife has been following this series on Channel 8. She finds this show interesting and at times, quirky...I find the plot of this series quite interesting and different from usual. One thing which particularly stood out for both of us were the exaggerated and unique poses which the characters used quite often. These poses stuck with us. "

Both of them catch the series either on Toggle or on television.
