S'pore indie band covers Sun Ho's 'China Wine' & it actually sounds good. No really. We mean it.

We can't believe we're saying this either.

You've probably heard of "China Wine" by Sun Ho.

Many of us might have only learned about the song's existence while following news about the City Harvest Church funds misappropriation case.

Kong claimed, at the time, that he planned for Sun Ho to break into the U.S. music market and spread the gospel using her music.

But of course, why pass up a chance to re-watch this immortalised classic, right:

A solid 5/7.

Certainly, putting aside the inappropriateness of a pastor's wife, or even as pastor (as she now is), dressing, dancing and also behaving in that manner, it remains of contention whether this song should have ever seen the light of day in the first place.

But at least one person decided it was worth covering

For instance, local YouTuber Joshua Simon did a SG50 mashup, which somehow was able to combine this with Kit Chan's "Home":

And now, we have indie "China Wine"

Several years on, especially with five of the six Kongvicts now in jail, we thought people would have erased the legendary tune from their memories.

Well, everyone, except for one local indie band, which appears to be hoping to revive interest in the single with their own cover of it, published on Monday, September 11.

The five-piece independent rock band calls themselves Stopgap, and according to their Facebook page, describes their sound as:

"... high energy grooves and delicate melodies via a diverse array of music styles. Stopgap strives to create music that's not only heard, but felt."

And it looks like they pulled off a two-fold impossibility with this masterstroke of a cover — They turned it into an indie song, and more importantly, they made it sound good.

For the first time, too, perhaps, you'll get the chance to make out the actual lyrics used in the song. It's fascinating.

Give it a listen:

It's been 10 years since the world first listened to China Wine, but we must admit, it does keep getting better (with each cover done of it).
