Customer buys S$185 cake from S'pore baker, refuses to pay S$0.50 for cake topper

So much self-entitlement.

A customer who paid S$185 for a unicorn cake had allegedly refused to pay an additional S$0.50 for a "Happy Birthday" cake topper, even going as far as to put the topper in his pocket without paying.

But despite being intimidated, the baker Wong Jie Hui (better known as @missgoob on Instagram and Dayre) did not back down.

"Then this one leh? Also have to pay ah!"

According to Wong's Facebook post, it started when the customer, E, called at 10.21am to ask if she could collect the cake early, ahead of their 11am appointment.

When Wong said it wasn't ready, E agreed to come by at a later time. Wong then proceed to complete the order before 11am.

However, E did not appear at 11am. Instead, a man representing E showed up at 11.26am to collect the cake on her behalf.

While Wong was assembling the unicorn's horn and ears, Wong's mother asked if the customer would like candles, to which he said yes.

He then asked if they had "Happy Birthday" candles, like this:

Wong's mother said yes, but it would be an additional purchase. The customer did not want to pay for it.

He then reached for the plastic toppers and exclaimed: "Then this one leh? Also have to pay ah!"

Wong notes that the customer was beginning to get loud and sounded rather rude, so she decided to speak to him personally (instead of letting her mother handle him).

Putting the topper in his own pocket

Wong informed him that the topper would be an additional S$0.50.

The customer then boomed, "AIYAH, CANNOT GIVE IT TO ME MEH.. We already buy your expensive cake, this one fifty cents only, CANNOT GIVE IT TO ME MEH, JUST GIVE IT TO ME LA."

Wong told him no, he would have to pay 50 cents.

The customer then replied, "AIYAH.. this one small item only leh!! Your kek so expensive already.. JUST GIVE IT TO ME!"

Before Wong could say anything, he took the topper and put it in his own pocket.

While Wong froze in shock, the man stood there with a smug face and folded arms.

As she walked into the kitchen, Wong realised she could not let the matter slide.

Confronting the customer

Wong walked out and steeled herself to ask for the topper back.

Her mother was packing the cake for the customer, who still had the unpaid item with him. Just before the cake was handed over, Wong spoke up.

"So would you like to have the topper? It will be fifty cents."

The customer twirled the topper in his hands and tried his luck again.

"I paid for the cake already leh, still need to pay for this meh!! Can't you just give it to me!!"

Wong tried to reason with him, explaining that this is not one of the items they can provide for free. He did not let it go, and the following exchange took place:

"But you buy kek from other shops they also give candles and this plastic thing what!!"

"We can give you the candles and knife but you have to purchase this topper for fifty cents."

"But other shops give for free la JUST GIVE IT TO ME LA!"

"We are not other shops."

Wong admits that she was shaking in fear on the inside.

Wong wrote that the man eventually tossed the topper back into the container, saying "AIYAH THEN FORGET IT LA I DON'T NEED IT".

He then walked out of the shop with his cake in a huff.

Coming back again

To Wong's surprise, the customer walked back in. He picked up the topper and asked again: "YOU REALLY CANNOT GIVE IT TO ME MEH???"

Wong repeated herself: "I cannot. It's fifty cents if you'd like to have it."

He finally caved in.

"AIYAH OK LA OK LA, I BUY LOR I BUY LOR"

When the customer walked out of the shop for the second time, he swung the cake over his shoulder carelessly, in the manner you would expect Santa to carry his bag of presents.

Wong was worried the cake might slide or get destroyed, but acknowledges that she cannot do anything about it.
