A couple looking for a four-day getaway trip to Singapore has so far spent more than four months here.
Paulina Krzysztoszek and Onunchekwa Nwenenda Morgan from the United Kingdom came to Singapore from Malaysia as part of their two-week vacation in Southeast Asia.
Ended up in hospital
However, on May 18, 2017, Morgan started having difficulty breathing. His wife had to call for an ambulance.
Paulina never saw it coming as she said that her husband "does not smoke nor drink excessively".
Morgan has been warded at Tan Tock Seng Hospital for the past four months.
Severe lung condition
Upon admittance to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Morgan was diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia, a medical condition that affects both his lungs.
He was intubated in the intensive care unit (ICU) and since he wasn't able to wean it off, Morgan had to undergo tracheostomy -- a medical procedure that involves creating an opening in the neck in order to place a tube into a person's windpipe to allow air to enter the lungs.
Soon, he contracted pneumothorax (collapsed lung) and went through a couple of procedures.
Things were looking better for Morgan as he seemed to be recovering well, and was subsequently transferred to a general ward in July.
The doctors even assured them that Morgan can be discharged in a week or two.
They thought this was the end of a nightmare, but it wasn't.
Once, in a state of confusion, Morgan took off his oxygen tubes during a physiotherapy session and started to walk away hastily.
Due to his lung condition, he collapsed.
Since then, he was readmitted to the ICU.

Accumulated bills
As they are foreigners, the prolonged stay and medical procedures have caused them to incur over S$200,000 in expenses.
According to Paulina, their insurance claim was declined as it was determined that his condition was "pre-existing".
They hope Morgan can continue his treatment in in Manchester as it would be cheaper.
However, flying back to the UK can turn fatal owing to Morgan's poor health, due to the change in oxygen levels when taking a flight.
With more procedures on the line, the couple is expecting their medical expenses to increase to S$300,000 and they simply can’t afford it.
They have since set up fundraising accounts on GoFundMe and Give.asia to pay for Morgan's expenses and have raised over S$10,000.
