S'pore Presidential Election 2017 Polling Day likely to be on Sept. 23

If there is even an election.

The Presidential Election in Singapore, if it were to happen with enough candidates given the go-ahead to run, is due in September 2017.

And if there is a contest, it will most likely be held on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2017.

Polling Day on Saturday

Polling Day is usually held on a Saturday for practical reasons.

This is to minimise disruptions to schools that are used as polling stations and counting centres.

This means Polling Day will fall on one of these days: Sept. 9, 16, 23 or 30.

Two Saturdays ruled out

However, Sept. 16 and 30 will most likely be ruled out as possible dates.

This is due to the Singapore Grand Prix happening between Sept. 15 and 17. The international event will take up significant public resources.

Sept. 30 will also be too close to the year-end national exams.

The Primary School Leaving Examination written papers start on Thursday, Sept. 28, this year.

If Sept. 9 were to be Polling Day, this would mean Nomination Day would be on Aug. 30 to ensure a minimum 10-day period between Nomination Day and Polling Day.

No Presidential Election likely as well

Singapore might also end up not going to the polls at all.

The Presidential Election Committee may qualify only one candidate, Halimah Yacob, as she is the only one who qualifies outright.
