S'pore start-up launches first e-scooter sharing service

Its first pick up/ drop off zone is outside Suntec City's main entrance.

Even though our private company-led bike-sharing schemes started a chain of bad behaviour from Singaporeans, a local start-up called Telepod remains undaunted, introducing Singapore's first e-scooter-sharing service.

The e-scooters target the first and last mile connection of a user's trip, which is the tricky bit at the start or end of your journey that may otherwise be inconvenient (e.g. a 15-minute walk from the MRT to reach a cafe).

The personal mobile devices (PMDs) were made available from Jun. 5, 2017 at Suntec City, and a second batch will begin trials in NTU by July.

How to use

1) Download the Telepod app from the Google Play Store (currently unavailable for iOS). The e-scooters cost $1 for every 10 minutes of use, whether or not it is moving. A one-time refundable deposit of S$49 is required.

2) Head to the designated zones for pick-ups and drop-offs. Suntec City's singular zone can be found at its main entrance, while NTU's will be at CleanTech Park, Research Techno Plaza, and North Hill Residences.

The designated zones exist to deter any indiscriminate usage of the e-scooters, such as abandonment or private use.

At the moment, the fact that there is only one at Suntec City right now means you have to re-park it at the same place you start your ride from, but the folks at Telepod tell us they are working on opening up more zones around the CBD area — which may make more sense for commuters actually hoping to ride it to another place.

3) Unlock your ride by scanning the QR code on the scooter with the Telepod app.

4) To end your trip, scan the QR code on the floor of the designated zone.

5) The maximum amount of time per rental is six hours. All e-scooters come with GPS tracking and alarm systems, so it's best not to try anything funny.

Twitter user @xavierlur has already spotted the PMDs outside Suntec:

In case you can't see it:

Oh, and the e-scooters will be free for NTU users at this initial stage when it launches later on. Don't be an a**hole, k?
