To celebrate the 125th birthday of the Football Association of Singapore on June 13, 2017, the Lions demonstrated how to almost beat Argentina in a friendly at the Sports Hub.
All the Singapore team had to do was put seven goals past the South American team.
The final score, however, ended 0-6, which could have easily been 0-26, had Lionel Messi taken part. But the footballing god had other domestic issues to tend to, namely, go on holiday and leaving his boys to take care of business here in Singapore.
Goals from Federico Fazio, Joaquin Correa, Angel Di Maria, Lucas Alario and debutants Alejandro Gomez and Leandro Paredes came from the Argentinians' super aggressive 2-3-4-1 system.
Despite being ranked 157th, gutsy Singapore managed to have 16 percent possession of the ball in the first 25 minutes of the game, leaving the world number two Argentina team a measly 84 percent possession.
If Argentina were ranked number one, they would surely have had 99 percent possession.
The first half, which ended 0-2, showed Singapore's superiority, in the form of extremely humid and warm weather, that slowed the Argentinians down.
The concession of four goals in the second half was the result of goalkeeper Hassan Sunny being forced off with injury.
But Singapore showed its grit, as Gomez and Paredes had to score their goals from 20 yards out, a sign that the Lions were working hard to keep the Argentina players at bay.
To really push Argentina to the limit, Di Maria had to use a backheel to score the final goal in the dying seconds of the game.
Happy 125th birthday, FAS.
