What a time to be alive.

In an era of US$50 per barrel of oil, European carrier Norwegian will start flying between London's Gatwick Airport and Singapore in September 2017.

Norwegian is offering a return fare of S$630 (£348.90) inclusive of all taxes to mark this new route. An upgrade with a choice of seat, food and checked baggage will cost S$809 (£449.80).

This is still way cheaper than a Singapore Airlines flight, which costs about S$1,200.

The 10,841km trip will be the longest budget flight ever operated.

It will take just under 13 hours from London to Singapore and about an hour longer on the way back to Gatwick.

Norwegian will launch four times weekly service from Sept. 28 this year.

Singapore is the second Asian destination, after Bangkok, for Norwegian. It was launched in the Thai capital in June 2013.

Norwegian is reportedly considering flights to Singapore from Paris, Barcelona and Oslo, the capital of Norway.

The start of this London-Singapore route will likely pressure SIA to compete with better deals.
