If you were spending yesterday surfing Facebook instead of doing actual work, you might have seen this video of a live cockroach crawling inside a pack of ready-to-eat braised duck:
The 12-second-long video, posted on Friday afternoon, was according to its description recorded at Ang Mo Kio Hub's NTUC FairPrice Extra.
An NTUC spokesperson confirmed in a statement shared with Mothership.sg that the roach/braised duck fiasco happened at their Ang Mo Kio Hub store.
The statement said pest control was brought in to inspect the area, but had found no signs of pest activity. Their last inspection was just last week, the statement added.
An investigation is also underway to determine how the producers of the cooked meat, which FairPrice stressed are external vendors, failed to reach Fairprice's "strict safety and quality standards".
Here's their statement in full:
"FairPrice takes food safety and quality matters very seriously. The product in question is sold on concession at our Ang Mo Kio Hub store at the ready-to-eat counter, which is run by an external vendor.
At noon yesterday, we closed the counter indefinitely and discarded all products while a full investigation is being conducted.
All our concession vendors are required to adhere to strict safety and quality standards. As a precautionary measure, we also called in the pest controllers to inspect the area yesterday and they have found no signs of pest activity. They last conducted their routine inspection on the store about a week ago.
We assure customers that food safety and hygiene is of paramount importance to us and we will spare no efforts in providing only wholesome food to our customers."
Well, nothing like a little protein with your braised duck to welcome the weekend... okay, no. Not really.
